Are you maniacs ready for another great
UNDERGROUND metal band interview?.. It was taken some
time ago when i discovered this great heavy metal band from
France - RéSISTANCE.
Very oldschool sounding band, with sharp 80's guitars, epic
sound and obscure rough vocals which make this band sounds
even more interesting. They formed in '98 but somehow most
of the metalheads got into them nowadays (me too!).
I was always more or less interested in french
speed/thrash metal, now it seems that France strikes
with metal again! Nathaniel (the singer) kindly gave me
interesting and full answers on all the questions i've sent.
This is a pretty interesting interview. With some details
on french metal scene, a lot of old and new names in metal
and some views and opinions.
And o'course, very irrefragable info on the band. Read it!

p.s. don't forget to check their myspace page and listen to couple
of great songs and a cover on MANILLA ROAD'S "Necropolis".
www.myspace.com/resistance667

G- Hi there RESISTANCE! What's up on French land lately?
Great to talk to you.

N- Hey Dan! Nathaniel here, singer in RESISTANCE.
Well, nothing groundbreaking over here. Hopefully we’ve
got good bands and friends to bang our heads with.
I’m just listening to INSANITY’s “Chronicles of the Cursed” cd,
and it fuels me with the right energy to give you the best answers
I can, while banging my head on the fucking keyboard
of my computer!
Ha!

G- You formed a band in 1998 according to your myspace page,
was metal totally forgotten in France those days like it was almost
everywhere in a world? You know, "nu metal" wave and
all that crap.

N- Naaah, I wouldn’t say that metal was totally forgotten at
that time, some die hard fans were still there, even if they
were and still are scarce to find. Indeed metal became this
huge commercial gimmick that is absolutely cliché and soulless,
but this is even worse in France, as this is definitely not a
metal/rock country at all. I mean you still manage to find
die hard metal maniacs, but the majority of the so called
“metal fans” are just ignorant losers without identity.
Oh well I guess it’s the same situation everywhere on the globe.

G- Have members of the band played in other bands before
Resistance or maybe had some other projects
during Resistance's life?

N- Well, the guitarist and the bass player founded the band and
haven’t been active in any other acts as seriously as they are in
RESISTANCE. Our new drummer Ilmar Marti Uibo is also
performing in the very good death metal band BLOODY SIGN http://www.myspace.com/bloodysign , a band in which I played
some years ago as a bass player and as a singer.

G- You guys recorded the first demo just in 2006, so were you
just been rehearsing all that time or you been playing gigs too?

N- Indeed 2006 is the year when a lot of things happened for the
band. I arrived in the band in 2005, but before I came there
were mainly rehearsals. You know the music and the musicians
had to evolve, and the result is what you can hear on the first
eponymous demo. It’s very amateurish, untight as fuck, and badly
played and sung, but that’s how good we could be at the time.
2006 is also the year when we played our very first gig with
RESISTANCE, and it was with the great death metal band
ESTUARY from Cincinnati, Ohio. A very good memory for all of us,
and we got a very good support from the audience which had not
heard a single song of us until then.

G- You have recorded the first album, so can you tell on what label
it is gonna be released/or already released?

N- It’s called “Bang Your Fucking Skull” and the title sums it up
pretty well! Haha! Our very good friends of
EMANES METAL RECORDS released it:
http://www.myspace.com/emanesmetalrecords
First as a cd version in January 2008, and then on vinyl in
June of the same year.
Since then we recorded a track called “Long Live Metal”
on the same label for a compilation LP featuring bands like
HIRAX, LONEWOLF, THE BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND,
RISING DUST, SERPENT SAINTS, etc.
And while you read these lines, there is a split ep with
HIRAX out, a co production between Emanes Metal records,
Under Siege records and Metal Forces Festival (Lörrach).
So far we don’t complain! Haha!
Of course, all these records are available directly from us for
a very fair price. Feel free to contact us at:
resistance667@hotmail.com

G- How would you describe your sound/style?
I would say heavy metal with elements of thrash but
maybe i'm wrong i've heard only three tracks (-by the time
i was making this interview -ed.)

N- Well that’s pretty much correct. We try to mix some elements
of heavy/epic metal in our own blend of thrash metal.
In a way we try to find our own path. Here and there you can
hear some failures, of course, but I think we get stronger and
stronger these days, and it’s really ok for us to evolve and not
to stagnate with just one formula. We listen to a lot of music
from blues to death metal, and of course many mind provoking
bands like MANILLA ROAD, SLOUGH FEG,
HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE, Rory Gallagher, CORONER, etc.
So in a way it helps being creative, at least I guess. From what
people tell to us so far it appears that we don’t sound like this
or that band, we have our own identity, and it’s already quite a lot!!!

G- The cover on Manilla Roads' Necropolis you've made is awesome,
how was Mark's (Shelton) response on it? Why did you decide
to cover exactly this song from all Manilla Road's brilliant songs?

N- Yeah, we even got to sing it onstage with Mark Shelton himself;
he’s a really humble and passionate character! It was amazing
to get such an enthusiastic feed back from him about our music
and of course about this cover!!! Priceless!
We just happened to love “Crystal Logic” as an album, and out
of the blue, the guitarist and I tried to cover it while we were
drinking some booze at his apartment, and the rest is
what you get on the cd!

G- What bands inspired you the most when you've been
composing your own stuff?

N- Well I think I mentioned some earlier already. We are very
interested in the arrangements of bands like MERCYFUL FATE,
also in the feeling pouring out of Rory Gallagher’s music
and many 70’s act. I don’ know, it’s like the riffs are coming
out of the blue, and we try to make a whole song from
this and that idea. We like to have several parts,
a lot of contrast in the songs, and we are definitely
more and more following that path recently.
In the end it’s only the satisfaction of playing the music
that we love totally that motivates us to keep that riff
and throw out this other one.

G- Is french scene really important to you?
Some years ago it was small but great movement in France
with many great bands, what is happening nowadays?

N- Well, the 80’s saw many heavy metal bands in France,
most of them released some very good first albums,
but once some managers or major labels started to tell them
what to do for their second and third album they started to play
more radio friendly music, and eventually lost their first fans
and disappeared for most of them. But today you see
a lot of these old bands coming back like ADX, BLASPHEME, etc.
Still the only French band from the 80’s which never gave up
is KILLERS from Southern France, and they keep on releasing
very strong records! All the power should go to them.
Lately there are quite many interesting newer bands to follow
like the deathsters of BLOODY SIGN, NECROS, RITUALIZATION,
NECROWRETCH, the heavy metal squadrons of LONEWOLF,
HÜRLEMENT, HEMORAGY, and the thrashers of
ZÖLDIER NOISE, the doomers of RISING DUST,
THE BOTTLE DOOM LAZY BAND, ATARAXIE,
and some black metal acts like LORD, ARPHAXAT…
We have also some very good underground labels here,
namely EMANES METAL RECORDS, and
LEGION OF DEATH RECORDS, INFERNO RECORDS…

G- What's your opinion on "black legions" and other french
black metal like Peste Noire or Deathspell Omega?
It seems to be cult for modern black metal kids..

N- It’s gonna be an easy answer. I don’t give a shit about
these kinds of bands whose dogmas, be it some religious
or political crap, absolutely don’t appeal to me. I think that
this is an easy music to get hooked to when you have a weak
personality. They are just poisoning what metal music stands for:
being free, against the grain, and being a channel for
all the negative sides of man, not to be a way of praising mental
degeneration and debilitating ideology of so called supremacy.
If these people need to express their religious or political views,
then why not leaving metal aside and join some church or nazi
organisation? This is where they belong according to me.
They got that entire metal thing wrong. (- TRUE!!!! -ed.)

G- Please name your favourite modern-days bands!

N- Well some are old, but keep on releasing very good albums
these last years and some are newer to the scene, but bring
me the essence of what I like in metal, like BROCAS HELM,
MANILLA ROAD, PENTACLE, SLOUGH FEG, NIFELHEIM,
HELLISH CROSSFIRE, ASPHYX, KAAMOS, NECROS CHRISTOS,
DROWNED, THE LAMP OF THOTH, PAGAN ALTAR, HIRAX,
THE GATES OF SLUMBER, METALUCIFER,
METAL INQUISITOR, THE CHASM, HEADHUNTER DC,
ANAL VOMIT, KING DIAMOND, THE DEVIL’S BLOOD,
PORTRAIT, ENFORCER, IN SOLITUDE, KATHARSIS,
EXCORIATE (Ger. RIP), EARTH FLIGHT, SEAMOUNT, etc.
The scene is much healthier now compared to what it was
in the mid 90’s.

G- Do you have any songs on french language?

N- No, strangely enough, I feel more comfortable with
English lyrics, don’t ask me why.

G- What are your lyrics basically about?
And who writes lyrics in a band?

N- I am behind the lyrics. The topics are quite usual
on the first album. Some songs are metal hymns, some others
talk about the fact of being true to yourself and stand for
what you are no matter how people might judge you,
some are like small stories inspired by the
comic/movie “Sin City” by Frank Miller.
Dark, twisted and violent!
On our new album, we’re basically doing a concept on a novel
written by the English man called Lewis, its title is “the monk”
and it is about the fall of a pure man of God into the worst
perdition ever. Murder, betrayal, blasphemies, incest and ghosts
are on the menu. It has a very KING DIAMOND edge to it!
So as you can see we try not to do twice the same thing.
For a third album, we’ll take a different approach as well I think.
We like to evolve all the time. But it doesn’t mean that “evolution”
is “betrayal” like so many bands figured out.
I think of METALLICA or PESTILENCE here.
We’d rather change our name if we’d do something which
can’t be defined as RESISTANCE any longer.

G- Are you into being on small underground label
or you would sign a contract with big label if you
get a chance to do it?

N- No way, we’d not sign on a bigger label than
EMANES records, because we would not get treated
as good as we are right now. I mean with our label boss
it’s more a friendship and the same dedication to the metal music
than business. We just intend to reach the people who might have
the same tastes and values when it comes to metal,
and these people you find at festivals like KEEP IT TRUE or
HELL’s PLEASURE in Germany. We don’t need to “grow”
bigger and bigger. I heard many times of bands signed on
bigger labels which are often in troubles, because they don’t get
royalties, or because the money that was supposed to be used
for their recording in the studio never arrived, etc…
We keep it at a human level, and the more control we have personally
on our music, the best it is for us, and this is something that
EMANES METAL understands perfectly.

G- Let my readers know in a couple of words is it hard to exist
in France these days? Do you all have regular jobs just to pay
for your bills?

N- Well we are still lucky to live in a country where life is still
rather good compared to many countries in the world.
Of course there are a couple of things which don’t work,
but I can’t really complain.
I work as a guide in a medieval castle. Joel the guitar player sells
instruments in a music shop, and Florian the bass player is
building guitars. Marti, our drummer is a professional musician.

G- What other musical styles do you like apart from metal?

N- Yeah, I love blues, and old rock from the 60’s/70’s.
I am very curious, yet very picky. For example I am now listening
to Janis Joplin, and when I started the interview, I was banging
my head on some INSANITY. I am very interested in the History
of the blues, rock and metal movement, for they are connected.

G- If i would travel to France, what would you recommend
to see in your country?

N- Wow, France has a very rich patrimony, so it all depends
where you go. There are plenty of really interesting museums
in Paris, and in Alsace, where I am living, we also have many
interesting to see dealing with History, architecture, etc.
You should simply come over here and discover for yourself,
it’s too huge. And of course the food matters a lot,
together with good alcohols!!! Héhéhé!

G- (this question is just for fun!) Are people in France drinking
alco much? And what also do you prefer (maybe vodka? :)

N- Yes we are ! Indeed as big wine producers, we have the
habit of drinking a lot in France. Especially metalheads
like to drink big time. Still in our area, close to Germany
we’re more into white wine and beer. My girlfriend’s father
is making his own schnapps!!! This is a very good way to lose
your mind and to be damn happy at the same time! haha!!!
In the band we are quite big drinkers I must confess,
but the thing is that alcohol and metal fit really well together,
and we like them both, so…

G- Add anything you like and thanx for doin that interview!

N- Thank you, Dan for giving us the opportunity to appear in
GRIND THE WORLD. It’s really cool to see people from all over
the world into our music. You also have a bunch of good bands
from RUSSIA, like classic ARIA stuff!!!
If you are still awake after this long read, you can contact us there:
http://www.myspace.com/resistance667 or here:
resistance667@hotmail.com
Lp’s, cd’s and shirts for sale at very reasonable prices.
So support the skull bangers that we are, and remember
that beer is certain, life is not! Hehehe!

Nathaniel.

BASTARDATOR interview

Hailz maniacs! It's time for some more interviews from 2009
that i did for Grind The World 'zine, in english original without
any editing.
Now it's canadian oldschool metallers BASTARDATOR,
the band formed not long ago but whose speed/thrash/punk
metal anthems earned some respect for them in past two years.
This is a pretty detailed interview, about not only Bastardator
but also some bands these guys were playin' before. Every
member of the band was answering questions separately,
which usually bands don't do, and that's something special
about the 'view. Guys' answers are kinda supplement each other.
BASTARDATOR: ERIC-BASS//JEFF-VOX//PATRICK-GUIT,
for this moment the drummer JO left the band, but in this 'view
he was also answering the questions 'cause it was
taken months ago.

ENJOY!

G.-Hi BASTARDATOR! Nice to talk with you guys thanx
for doin' an interview! Tell about the band please,
'cause not so much information can be found in a
magazines/net (especially for the Russian maniacs is hard
to find an info). Where and by whom the band was started?..
Were there any line-up changes?

Eric: The band started when i met Jo at a show and saw
a huge speed metal wheel on his jacket. We started jamming
just bass and drums for a few months. We tried out a couple
of guitarists but they were mainly into death metal and
didn't seem to grasp what we wanted to do. Then came
Patrick, we met him through his ex girlfriend he was into
a lot of old hardcore bands like the Misfits so we got
together and it just clicked.
JO: After a while of rehearsing, we got Commander Cody
on vocals. With him we recorded a 6 tracks tape/cd ep
"Bastards of Mayhem". We then toured a bit with
TRIOXIN 245 and recorded the split 7inch with
CHILDREN OF TECHNOLOGY. Cody soon
after left and was replaced with Mega-Jeff. With him
we recorded the "Identify the Dead" LP...
Jeff: I was playing in another band called KARNAX.
The guys asked me if i wanted to try out for vocals.
The rest is history my dear friends.
Patrick: Yes, this is and/or was in fact, history which
has occured amongst dear friends, as they say.

G.-Have other members of Bastardator ever been
playin in other bands?

Eric: I sang for a few bands before Bastardator.
I was in a grindcore band from Montreal Quebec called
HUMAN GREED around 1991-92 but they kicked me out
cause i was always stoned hahaha. I also sang for a punk
hardcore band called the KITCHEN KIDS (don't ask about
the name i didn't get it either} in 1988-89. Bastardator is
my first band as a bass player.
Jeff: I played bass in a 1977 style punk band called
THE SWEET JANES. And KARNAX and hardcore punk
band IT'S ASSHOLE TIME.
Jo: Ya the SWEET JANES where really good! HUMAN GREED
later became quite popular in the grind world with lots of
releases. I played in many bands mainly drums in
TRIOXIN 245 and guitar and vocals in GERM ATTAK.

G.-The next question is about you 2009 LP ("Identify the Dead",
it's your first full length as far as i know right?.. How long have
you been working on this LP?..

Patrick: We've been working on this album for probably
around 1 1/2 years. Between original conception
all the way through to finalizing songs and recording them.
Some ideas for these songs have been kicking around
since Jo and Eric first started jamming together and some
were finalized right up to and during recording in early
april '08.
Jo: also, when it was finally recorded, it took time waiting
for the artwork and labels etc.
Jeff: Well when i joined the band the guys were working
on the material but when we came together it all came
together.

G.-I guess it'll be available in a vinyl format? Whats your
opinion on vinyl and what do you guys prefer vinyl or CDs
or maybe tapes?

Patrick: Yes, they will be available on vinyl.
I like all different medias for different reasons. I do tend
to collect tapes and vinyls though.
Eric: ..i prefer vinyls at home but they're hard to play in
the van. Haha.
Jeff: I prefer vinyl.
Jo: Vinyl as well. I have lots of CDs,but i didn treally pay
for any f them. Mainly discography Cd's ive aquired through
doing a distro over the years. I really like Records and Tapes!

G.-Is your LP's material somehow different from the old
songs?.. and if so, what's the difference between them?

Jeff: I found alot of the old lyrics excluding some songs
were about partying and listening to metal extremley loud
which is cool and all but the new lyrics are alot more serious,
topics include war, facism, racism, homophobia, secret religious
societies.
Patrick: Plus the lyrics on the album were written by all of us
equally so you might see different styles of writing.
The recording sounds alot better on this than on the demo
but still is raw and dirty, and the songs have more or less
the same style but I cant help but feel like we've come
a long way since our demo release.
Eric: Ya that might be because i can actually play now!

G.-Am i right that Chany from Inepsy made an art for
this new Lp (by the way the art is awesome)?
Maybe he also did an art for the demos or posters...
I guess you're friends with Inepsy?

Jeff: Well i dont know if were "friends" per say with the
great Chany of inepsy fame....... no were friends haha
he's a great guy. Talented as hell im a big fan of INEPSY
and his artwork. Its an honor for his artwork to be on
the front of our albums.
Eric: ya we're really good friends with the INEPSY
especially Chany. I met him back in the 90's some time
before Inepsy. I remember seeing them for the first time
in Montreal when they still lived in Quebec city and telling
Chany that there songs were amazing and it hasn't changed.
Jo: YA Chany drew the demo, the split with CHILDREN OF
TECHNOLOGY, and the LP. He's good at that sort of post
apocalyptic skulls type of thing. He's also one of the most
sincere and friendly persons ive ever met!

G.-And can you name some other underground bands from
Canada, of oldschool metal or punk scene?

Patrick: HARD CHARGER, CRITICAL CONVICTIONS,
CELINE DION, TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM, SACCAGE,
GINETTE RENAULT,etc.
Eric: FATAL FLAW, METALIAN, MANIAC
Jeff: theres alot of great bands in Canada right now in
the underground my favourites are INEPSY, DIRTY NUNS,
RETURN TO STRENGTH, RUSTED DAWN etc.
Jo: Also SPECTRES, FEAR OF TOMORROW, DISKONECTED,
RUSTED DAWN, HUMANS OFF PLANET EARTH, DIEAREA,
SKIN SLICER.. Canada's almost as wide as Russia, so its hard
to know what's going on on the other side of the country!

G.-You also made a split record with italian band Children of
Technology, tell us a little bit about this recording and why did
you decide to do a split record with this band?..

Patrick: These recordings were supposed to be released a long
time ago, with a different band but things happened which
made things a little bit more complicated but I'm glad it
did because now it came out with these awesome Italian
Motorpunks.
Jeff: I fucking love this band total motorpunk worship.
It just sucks that the release has old material left over from
when the Codemaster (Cody) was in the band.
Eric: that band sounds fuckin awesome hope to get to play
and get hammered with those guy's and gal one day!
Jo: Ya we first met them a few months ago when we did a
demo trade!

G.-What modern bands are the best in your opinion name
your favorite ones!

Jeff: BAPHOMETS BLOOD, THAT'S IT THATS ALL!
And SKIN SLICER.
Patrick: SUPERCHRIST, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, ZEKE,
INEPSY, etc.
Jo: LEBENDEN TOTEN is my favorite modern band by far!
Also INEPSY, CRIMINAL DAMAGE and G.A.T.E.S.

G.-OK standart question: can you name 5 metal bands
that have influenced BASTARDATOR?

Patrick: Old METALLICA AND SLAYER, TANK,
BLACK SABBATH, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, RAZOR,
DIAMOND HEAD, Bon era AC/DC, DEATH, etc...
Jeff: DESTRUCTION, RAZOR, MOTORHEAD, TANK,
OLD VOIVOD.
Eric: SODOM-CRUMBSUCKERS-BATHORY-
CELTIC FROST/HELL HAMMER-{CANADIAN} SLAUGHTER
Jo: the simplicity and intensitry of bands like SACRILEGE,
ONSLAUGHT, ANNIHILATED, DEBAUCHERY,
LEGION OF PARASITES...

G.-Maybe some punk bands that made an influence on you
as a musicians?

Jeff: for punk bands ive always been a fan of bands like,
IGGY AND THE STOOGES, THE DEAD BOYS, 222's,
DISCHARGE, AMEBIX and so on.
Patrick: DRI, DISCHARGE, RAMONES, BAD BRAINS.
Eric:MDC-BROKEN BONES-SUICIDAL TENDENCIES-
SOD-SEPTIC DEATH.
Jo: Fuck i wouldnt call S.O.D. a punk band at all! DISCHARGE
is my all time favorite band! Nothing comes close to being as
intense as that! I've learned playing drums to DISCHARGE
thats for sure. I've over listened to bands like ANTI CIMEX,
MOB 47, DISORDER and CHAOS UK!

G.-I've seen an M.P.D.S. logo on your member's jacket!
Are you involved in Metal Punk Death Squad mob somehow,
do you know any people from M.P.D.S.?..

Eric: Can't say that we are official members but i think we
qualify hahaha!
Jo: I'm friends with Reverand Sin from Bludwulf... does
that count?? hehe .. MYSPACE PUNX DORK SQUAD!
(ahhhaha i should remember this deciphering!! -ed.)

G.-Are you touring a lot and what were the last shows
you made?.. If you do tours, in how many countries have
you played already?..

Patrick: Just Canada but we're planning on going to the U.S. soon.
Eric: Hopefully we'll be invited to Europe or else we'll just have
to invade. I would also like to play South America
Jo: Ya ideally ide like to play South America or South East Asia!

G.-I guess you prefer underground labels to major..
what's your opinion on bands which are signing contracts
with big or even giant major labels?..

Eric: Fuck we'll sign to a major just send the limo to pick
us up hahaha
Jo: Well the days of thrash metal bands signing to big labels
is over! METALLICA has Elektra, SLAYER had
Deff Jam/American ,TESTAMENT had Atlantic and
MEGADEATH had Capitol... I dont know if i could sign to
a bigger label like MUNICIPAL WASTE, EVILE, GAMMA BOMB
or TOXIC HOLOCAUST. Its hard to say! Theres advantages,
but you can easyly get fucked over because they front you
alot of money, merchandise, van etc, and you have to play
their tours, etc.

G.-It's said on your site that you are not acceptin nazis
or racists, is there a big problem of nazi parasites
in metal subculture of Canada?..

Eric: I don't believe it's just Canada there seems to be
alot of it all over the world. Why can't we just get drunk
and headbang together HAHAHA
Jeff: Well its not that is a huge problem but you meet alot
of metal fans that have this racist or homophobic attitude
like calling people fags and gay bashing and shit.
Its just not cool.
Jo: Ya i have the fucking metal scene up my ass!
For the most part its just redneck jock douchbags!
The soul-patch PANTERA fag-bashing types are
more annoying than the teenage NSBM white power
computer geeks!

G.-Tell us a little bit about your hobbys or some interests
of the band's members if its possible.

Jeff: SKATEBOARDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oldschool
skateboarding, using your hands to skate!
Patrick: Plus using your hands to pleasure yourself.
Eric: I like to play a little poker live or online.
Jo: I record many fake bands by myself. Punk, Metal, Harsh
and Ambient Noise.. I do mail order, label and distro, organise
shows, tours, bicycle alot, and collect records like crazy.
I spend most of my time watching my son though...

G.-If there was possibility to go on tour anywhere you want,
where would you go first?..

Patrick: We had a great time on Venus and we had a great
time on Mars. Space truckin' round the stars!
Jeff: I'd love to tour South America or Europe first,
but ive always been fascinated by Japan and think
it would be fucking sweet to tour there.
Eric: Europe and South America as i said before.
Jo: Places that bands dont go to often or are scared of going!
Like South East Asia, Russia, Middle East, Mexico...

G.-Can you name the worst people in a history of mankind
and maybe the best people.

Jeff: Worst People: anyone who says Hello Jello when
they greet you.
Best People: Father Ted Crilly, Father Dougle McGuire
and Father Jack Hackett and the whole Craggy Island Bunch!!!!!
Jo: that's a fucked up question, because i tend not to make
heroes out of people! You could easyly say that as a group,
the British Empire where the worst people ever seeing as
how they colonized half the planet... or you could easily say
that 1 month old babies are the best people in the world
because they are totally innocent! hehehe

G.-OK and the last question: if there was armaggeddon
tomorrow what would you do? (this is just for fun!)

Patrick: I would flee the earth in an escape pod to a new
planet where the sun would be a different colour,
therefore granting me superhuman powers which would
be used to do deeds of good, possibly foiling the evil plots
of criminal masterminds. By day I'd be a mild mannered
reporter. The only thing that could stop me would be small
pieces of my home planet. Makes sense right? (wtf????? -ed. :)
Jeff: Get drunk and take up interprative dance.
Eric: Get drunk and roast some sausages.
Jo: Not get drunk, stay Vegan and go on a shooting spree
at the police station!

=========================================
www.myspace.com/bastardator
go here to check the songs, after that BUY RECORDS!!!!

YASUYUKI SUZUKI INTERVIEW

Hey! This time i wanna represent you another interview
that i've done this year, with metalic master of JAPAN
Yasuyuki Suzuki. Known for his work in the underground
metal bands like ABIGAIL, BARBATOS, CUT-THROAT and
punk metal project TIGER JUNKIES (with bandmate Joel Grind
from TOXIC HOLOCAUST). Highly respected metal-sensei!!!

This is the original interview on english (as always
in this blog i upload english-language version of the
interview).

For every true undergound maniac! ENJOY!

=============================================

G -Hi Yasuyuki! - Let's start to talk from the very beginning..
When you discover metal and punk rock and what was
the first in your life, metal or punk? How old were you
when you started to listen to heavy music?

Y -My first heavy music was metal. I listen IRON MAIDEN's
"Killers" on friend house. After listen BLACK SABBATH
and OZZY then into heavy metal. I was 13 years old.
Then I found thrash metal like METALLICA, VENOM,
SLAYER, MOTORHEAD, RAVEN, EXCITER, etc. I was
into fast bands. After I have listen punk bands like
DISCHARGE, GBH, MISFITS, SEPTIC DEATH, etc.
But heavy metal is my roots.

G -What was the first band you formed, was it Abigail
or some other project?

Y -My first serious band was ABIGAIL. It was formed in 92.

G -You started to play black metal very early, as early as
norwegian bands i think. Who were the main influences for
Abigail in early 90s?..

Y -Yes I loved norweigian black metal bands like MAYHEM,
DARKTHRONE, BURZUM when formed the band.
I still love these bands. Also my main influenced 80's black
metal bands like VENOM, BATHORY, SODOM, BULLDOZER,
NME.

G -Who was in first line-up of Abigail?

Y -Yasuyuki(Bass and vocals), Youhei(Drums), Yasunori(Guitars).

G -What Japanese bands were important for Abigail in
the early/middle 90s?

Y -SIGH and SABBAT. Especially SIGH was very important
band for us. Requiem for fools 7'ep is still my fave record.

G -In the end of the 90s you formed Barbatos and Cut-Throat
with some members from Sigh is it right?

Y -CUT THROAT was formed with members from SIGH.
I'm playing bass on this band. We started the band play
for thrash metal cover songs. BARBATOS is my one-man band.
No complete line up.

G -Barbatos first demos/singles were different from late
Barbatos, it was dedicated to war i guess. And the music was
different.. why have you changed a style to more metal/punk
sound for Barbatos?

Y -Yes first demo 1942 was little bit defferent latest sounds.
I remeber these traxs were out trax from ABIGAIL.
1942 demo was tribute to World War II Kamikaze pilots.
BARBATOS is free music band. Maybe I was into metal punk
music after released 1st demo.
Also, 1st demo had no good response.

G -I first heard Barbatos at some compilation, a song was
from 'Rocking Metal Motherfucker' but it was almost
impossible to find your albums in Europe.
'From Beyond' was european label but it had not so
good distribution... Is this a reason why you changed label
many times, because of bad distribution or for some
other reasons?

Y -Really ? I think From Beyond prod. have good distribution
in Europe. Many guys told me BARBATOS got better contract
than ABIGAIL, ha ha! Why changed label every albums ?
It's simple. It was all one shot contract. No option deal.

G -Latest release from Barbatos was live album recorded
in Finland, what other albums are you planning to release
in close future?

Y -I released Finland live CD on Old Cemetary prod.
But it was shit released. Because label did re-edit from master tape.
They delated all audience screaming. Shit. But I'll be release
DVD version very soon (In fact, it is released some months ago,
check this DVD it's great! -ed.). I think it's 100% better than
the CD version.

G -Did you enjoy playing in Finland and in Europe as well,
maybe you come to Russia one day?..

Y -I really enjoyed Finland tour. Please check it on DVD.
Everydays hangover, ha ha. Also Festung Open Air fest was
great too. Yeah I hope so ! I think easy play in Russia because
europian BARBATOS members staying in Finland.
If I can find organizer in Russia, i'll do it !

G -Ok let's talk about Cut-Throat, was it a 'just for fun'
project from the beginning? You formed it with Sigh guys,
are you friends with them for a long period of time?

Y -CUT THROAT is pure thrash metal project band.
It was just for fun play thrash metal cover songs.
But we composed few original trax for release debut album
"Rape Rape Rape". Yes I have good friendship with SIGH
since '90. I played session bass on SIGH usa tour 02 and 08.
Never stop our metal attack !

G -The name Cut Throat was taken from Bulldozer song
am i right?

Y -Yes ! Ha ha. But RAZOR too.

G -What is your favourite cover that you're playing
with Cut-Throat?

Y -SACRIFICE "Sacrifice", WARFARE "Metal Anarchy",
MISFITS "Skulls", RAZOR "Evil Invaders".

G -Is Cut Throat active now?

Y -Yes. We just released new 7'ep "Thrash Metal Crazy Night"
on Necromancer rec. It's contain NECROPHAGIA cover and
3 live trax.

G -And finally i just HAVE to ask about Tiger Junkies...
When you and Joel met each other? When you decided
to do a project together?

Y -I met Joel on ABIGAIL south east asia tour '05.
He played guitar on this tour. We decided start the
TIGER JUNKIES after Malaysia show. We have talked
about punk rock with beer when backed to hotel.
Band name come from Singapore's Tiger Beer.

G -How was the people's response on Tiger Junkies
first LP?

Y -Good ! If you loved punk rock like DISCHARGE, GBH,
THE EXPOLOITED, MORTORHEAD, you can enjoy it !

G -Are you planning to do a live shows for Tiger Junkies
someday?

Y -No idea. Maybe near future...

G -One of the main topics of your lyrics is sex and girls haha..
and i've seen so much pictures of girls on your myspace!
Are they just fans or they are friends of yours?..

Y -My main lyrics from beer, metal, sex ! It's very fit for my
sounds. Influenced from VENOM, SODOM, BULLDOZER.
Pics? They are my friends! It's good memorials.

*and some questions not about bands:

G -What is your favourite song that you composed yourself?

Y -Satanik metal fucking hell.

G -Can you name your favourite metal bands of current days?

Y -SIGH, WASTELANDER, BASTARDATOR, BLIZZARD,
DRUNKEN BASTARDS, KUOLEMA, FRAMTID, GORGON,
FASTKILL.

G -Do you like japanese punk/hardcore scene, if so what
are your favourite jap-core bands?

Y -I'm not in japanese hardcore scene. But recently we
played few japanese punk bands and started communication
with crusties. I like FRAMTID, FEROCIOUS X, DEFECTOR, etc.

G -What movies do you like to watch?

Y -Takeshi Kitano's movies.

G -What was the last record you bought?

Y -FRAMTID limited LP.

G -What are your plans for 2009?
Maybe some good releases from your bands?

Y -Now we are recording new ABIGAIL album.
It will be out in summer 09 from Nuclear War Now !
BARBATOS will release split 7'ep with BLUDWULF
(already out, killer split! -ed.), split 7'ep with HERETIC.
If possible, I want to record new album. CUT THROAT
will release "Rape rape rape" picture LP version on CUM records.
Maybe TIGER JUNKIES will record new traxs for 7'ep!

========================================

Taken spring 2009
Questions: Pigy
Answers: metal master YASUYUKI SUZUKI

SALUTE interview

It's been long since i wanted to make an interview with the SALUTE. The incredible and peculiar band from UK, playing not your predictable black thrash metal or any predictable metal at all, with the album "Above the Law" they just smashed everyone on the both sides of atlantic in 2007 and this year they're back with awesome and VERY powerful long play "The Underground". The questions were sent in the end of 2008 and Tom "Swine" answered it in february 2009. ONLY now i present this interview to english-language readers, it's been different delays and still russian version of the interview not available anywhere, but will be printed as soon as russian language zine number 2 will be out. Don't forget to buy their albums! If you are true metal fan and looking for something literaly SPECIAL, you got to check these guys! Also, interview is available at SALUTE's page at myspace:

http://www.myspace.com/salutesalute

-Hi SALUTE great to talk with you how r you doin guys?

-SWINE - Pretty sharp brother, pretty nice. Late, alone in the Salute bunker drinking cold ones and listeng to Caramel Dad's back catalogue. Its snowing quite heavily outside... First time in yeeeeaaaarrrsss. Pretty rite!

-G- The first question is about your upcoming album. I've been waiting for this release for so long and some demos i've heard on your myspace page are just killer! So how longhave you been working on this album and what music influenced you the most during recording of the songs?..

-S - We started recording the album October 20th 2007, and we finished around Jan 08 (spread over a few sessions.) Some tracks were written at the time of recording and some a year or so previous. We mixed/mastered it throughout the first part of 2008 whilst waiting to find a label. Influence on this one - heavy sounds and dragon stout. Plenty of of Soul on the album... Much more nasty than Above the law.

-G- What label is gonna release this new LP and will it be available on vinyl or only CD again?

-S - WITCHES BREW GERMANY is releasing the slab on cd at first, then maybe vinyl in the future by someone. Above the Law will come out on vinly im sure. We didnt realise enough people would want it on vinyl, so we didnt even really think about it. We just pushed on. STRUGGLE!!!!Dont get me wrong though vinyl is the truth. Listen to hell awaits or south of heaven on vinyl compared the cd versions. Makes you want to melt your disk collection....

-G- What studio do you use for your recordings and do you produce your work yourself?..

-S - We have our own self-built studio - MUSCLE STUDIOS UGH!!!. i'ts an old barn we use for jamming/recording. Its been THE compound for the past 7/8 years. Many parties here. Marked by the Baron was done here too along with Hateful Abandons new one (ROPE-AAHHH). I control the dials in the studio along with help and much input from Kaptain, although the equipment gets damp and solied from cider spillage and cig dust. Lots of old drum around courtesy of the Axelad! JIMMY!

-G- The new songs seems to be a little bit doomish maybe heavier.. i mean "Six Deep", but on the other hand "Dr. Faust" is a very motor song, fast and punkish. Who composes all music in the band and do you make all arrangements together?.. Or do you and Kaptain just write different songs and then work with these songs in the studio?..

-S- HAHA Motor grind! Heavier for sure!!! The work ethic is - know you music, keep buying music, and write riffs that are horrid/sharp/nasty. We'll never change or stop. SALUTE is an old Tanker!. Kaptain and I both write songs. I write alot separately and he brings shit to the table for us to jam out together with myself on the beaters. In the futue we will be writing songs in our room as a full band along with our drummer Jimmy Axe. Hes a rusher/shredder on the kit...sounds very punkish to me. Aggressive. Hes been laying down stuff for a while now. JUST YOU WAIT! GAS TANKS!

-G- If you can name some songs from the new LP and describe them, please tell about it. Especially interesting to know about your influences because some riffs are just fantastic (like main "Shredding Belt" riff for example!).

-S- That riffs a fucking nasty backward riff. Horrid. All riffs are influenced by mood/feel/groove/time. Its gotta sound alive as shit! That is SALUTE. Real and true!!! Always. We're all buggers, but we stay true to the way of Humongous.
I dont wanna describe my mornings or the songs though, you'll know whats going on by the sounds. Most of the lyrics will be in the sleeve so look and sip! Its all just influence pushed through and out how we want it to sound. FEEL! No harbouring of guilt and unhappyness here. LET IT OUT! PUSH!

-G- The last album was very heavy metal like, maybe with an influence of some sleaze/glam metal (i think so at least). You are the only band i know that mixes Motorhead, Celtic Frost and maybe old hard rock and heavy metal into very original and outstanding type of metal, so do you consider yourself a heavy metal band or something else?.. I personally think your first influence is Hellhammer/Celtic Frost am i right?

-S- You are correct about the first album to a point yeah. Kaptain was pumping the sleaze alot at the time. We have probaly talked about what genre type we would be about twice in the last 5 years. Its doesnt matter AT ALL! I mean Voivod used to be classed as power metal sometimes. Whats power metal now?????Ive never wanted to be in a one genre band playing just thrash or just heavy metal etc. We listen to a HELL of alot of music and as long as we create songs that we can pour to and live by then thats all that matters. That goes for alot of bands too i think..good bands. To us its boring writing just thrash songs because you're supposed to be a thrash band etc. You're gonna get tired pretty quick.

-G- OK what was your influence from the start when you formed the band? I know that Salute was kinda black metal oriented band (or cover band) is it right?

-S- We were a Marillon cover band to start with, mixing our sets with some Mcartney hits too. HA! Fuck Paul!!! Dickhead... Our first demo/album was mostly black metal with some groove and thrash. Some good songs from that time but the style was done with for us so we swiftly sorted things out.

-G- Also tell please about the "Swine" project.. great straight Von worship band! Is this project alive or it is buried?..

-S- That was a one-off idea back in 2004 after quitting controlled education. Written and recorded in a week and released by ourselves. It turned out pretty good. Maybe a little polished but there wasn't much thought to it. Again, just mood. I'd like to do more sometime but Salute is priority at the moment. Im waiting for the sign... V FOR VEADTUCK

-G- 'Marked By The Baron' has been re-released but maybe other records of SWINE are possible?

-S- Hopefully. Itll be fucking real next time around though.

-G- You are a completely underground band. What do you think about signing to a big label?.. In the 80s many great bands had struck deals with big labels but now all good underground bands are doing everything themselves or use DIY type labels.. Do you think the situation on that field has changed for the worse in last 10-15 years? Big labels are no more a target, you know.

-S- BACKLASH/BACKWASH/BACKBREAK
With the Internet and cheaper recording equipment made available, bands have the opportunity to do alot more work themselves. This has problems with quality control though. Alot more shit gets further than it should (check out free cd's you get with alot of metal mags for instance.. Crap.) I dont know about big labels, there must be good points and bad points. Alot of ripping off happens. You hear about it everyday. MONEY! Real people will find the music that counts wherever it is, the rest doesnt count for shit.

-G- What influences your lyrics? Who writes them in your band?

-S- We usually write lyrics for our own songs, sometimes together, mostly not. Influences vary from rotten moods to certain riffs/songs/bands we like. The mood a good riff puts you in can be more productive than anything.

-G- What were the first metal bands you've started to listen to and when did you discover heavy music? (the question for all members!)

-S- Kaptain says he's been listening to Hellhammer since '83!!!! Maybe son! He did go to school with Nico Mcbrain's son though, and they were good friends for a time, so thats pretty hardcore. He was always a big Maiden fan when we were growing up. I prefer the Dianno albums now but when he showed me Rhyme of the ancient mariner back in the day I couldnt believe it!!!! Jimmy has been exclusively listening to Repulsion all his life, and I got into Sepultura's Morbid visions when I was about bloody 8! I didn't realise back then that it'd become a fuckin destert island number. AAAGHGHGHH. OHG!

-G- What was the last CD/LP you've bought (also a question for all members).

-S- My last few were some Killing joke rarities, Budgie, Nazareth's Best of (a present), Kaptain - Noir's HADES RIIISEE. Jimmy Axe - Kode 9 and the spaceape - Memories of the future, some new wave dub-step.
The new VIRUS too!! Shitting hell!

-G- What do you think about punk and metal music mixing into the poly-stylistic thing? Can you name the best punk-metal band in your opinion?

-S- The style is about a natural as spending all your spare time ploughing music. Salute is the best band that mixes punk/metal. Yes that's correct now...

-G- Please name you favourite modern bands and also maybe some british unknown bands which in your opinion are best in UK scene.

-S- Modern bands as in bands still going/past 10/20 years i'd say Inepsy, Darkthrone, Electric Wizard, Ramesses, Aura Noir, Portishead (for 3). This aint a good question for me, the beers have kicked in and Ive been spending all my time STILL searching the vaults of old (oh this is SO understandable, no time for the new bands when you still have TONS of old ones.. -ed.). Check out Gayspace, follow links, hit the zines. It's all there, fucking tonnes! British bands - Old Mayor - some old lads weve known for years. HEAVY STREET DOOM RIFFS! Thats about it for the british unknown scene. Dry...

-G- How big was the people's response to 'Above The Law'? Are you satisfied with it?

-S- The response was all positive. Even if its a bad review its good anyway, as it means the reviewer hasn't got a fucking clue!!!! We didnt know what the response would be like at all and we're satisfied with the album as a first proper release. Again, it was true to us at the time. There is not fake striding on there!!!

-G- Tell us about your interests and views if its possible.

-S- All of us live for music.... nerd overlords! Then comes film, beer, literacy PILES, hanging out, working hard and the struggle/push. Kaptain is a Poker lad, Jimmy hits Chess. I do youtube music research ha! V/M stlye!

-G- Are you plannin to do lots of big tours?.. Maybe a european tour in near future? (that would've been great!!)

-S- We wanna start hitting Europe more for sure. We need to be invited first though ha! Were hitting Portugal in March so cant wait for that little baby. Gonna explode. We wanna start putting our own shows on in the UK though. We're fed of paying like 200 quid to travel and play a fucking show with bands you wouldn't even believe!! ROT

-G- The next question is just for fun: 'Above the Law' was also a name for one Stieven Seagal movie :)Maybe you took that name for the album from the movie? :)

-S- HAHA the only Seagal/Seagul movie thats any cop is an old one, maybe his first. Man I forgot it. The ending scene is him busting down a drug den. Going nuts. Bar that i'd maybe only watch Under seige for the millionth time on a sunday in cacks and Blue rays. Hard times, but the 12 cold will rise to the occasion!!!
But no we didn't take our name from that. The name represents passion for SOUND!

OFF!

SACRILEGE (Interview with Tony May)

SACRILEGE: AN INTERVIEW WITH TONY MAY,

ORIGINAL BASS PLAYER FOR LEGENDARY

PRE-CRUST METAL PUNK BRITISH BAND

Okay lads! this interview was taken this spring,

when i contacted Tony and he was so kind

answering all my questions about the past and

present, music and life in general, and of course

about the band that every metal and punk maniac

should WORSHIP: SACRILEGE!!!

This glorious ansamble was active in mid and late

80s and created the unique mixture of metal and

punk, taken both styles to new direction, new

sound and incredible outstanding riffs, which

someone would name even 'proto crust' riffs.

They were a punk band from the start, became

a crossover punk metal band and dove into the

depths of doom heavy metal in the late 80s,

and only now their legacy is becoming as

important as it must be, this was the band

that ran faster than time and were simply

outstanding!

Of course being a huge Sacrilege's fan i asked

many questions about the history and members

of the band. I haven't read many Sacrilege

interviews it's hard to find, and these i've read

were all old, so i hope you enjoy these Tony's

answers as much as i did!!!

Taken: spring 2009

Hi Tony! Thanx for doin an interview with us!

D - OK let's start with the questions 'bout very old times!

When have you first got into heavy/extreme music?

What was the first band which really impressed you?

T - I was into rock music in 1975 & when i heard

B.Sabbath, there was no other band as heavy

& original, as them @ that time, so my love of heavy

metal grew with Sabbath.

D - The first band of yours was Final Attempt according

to your myspace. What style it was, i guess simple

aggressive punk usual for those times?

T - It was 1980 & yes Final Attempt we were very raw

& inexperienced, we could not play our instruments

properly, but that did not seem to matter

( Punk Attitude), we just wanted to get our views

on life in general, across to anyone who would

listen, we were young & angry.

D - Tell us a little bit about your short

appearance in Varukers. Why you and other guys

left this band and decided to form Sacrilege?

T - I personally decided to leave the Varukers on the

way home from a european tour in 1984, that tour

had been very exhausting, & i found out Damian

the guitarist felt the same ,so we discussed

forming a new band, & that turned out

to be Sacrilege.

D - You even did two old Final Attempt songs with

Varukers, whos decision it was to make these

songs with the Varukers?

T - Yes when i joined the Varukers, i offered Rat

some F. Attempt songs, & Rat shortened them to

fit the Varukers style of song writing, the songs

were "Stop the Killing" & "No Hope of a Future".

D - So in 1984 you formed Sacrilege. Is it right that

from the start the goal was to create an

anarcho-punk band?

T - Yes the intention with Sacrilege, was to create

an anarcho punk band, as we followed such

bands as Crass.

D - Anarchopunk movement was very influential for

all bands in those times, but later many of them

turned into more metalized sound.

Why in your opinion it happened?

T - We were listening to alot of punk & metal bands,

& the metal influence started to rub off in our music,

it just seemed a natural progression for us.

D - Anarchist or other 'political' views, was it really

important for Sacrilege in early days?

T - We lived the life of protesting, going on demos etc,

so the band gelled nicely into that part of our lifes.

D - Do you remember what was the first song you

composed with Sacrilege?

T - Good question, i had to really think about this & it

was a song called Cattle Market, with Liam our

original drummer, the song was later dropped

from the set.

D - OK many bands were tryin to incorporate metal

sound into punk in mid 80s, and Sacrilege were one

off the best no doubt. Just from WHERE you got all

these incredible riffs, what bands were influential for

you? Were you into metal and punk both at that time?

D - Like i said before we listened to alot of Punk & Metal

& i think this gave us an advantage, we drew our

influences from so many bands like Antisect, Sabbath,

Slayer & Trouble, they were really our main

influences, Damian wrote 99.9% of the music

& he just progressed so quickly, in my opinion

a very underrated guitarist.

D - Later your songs became longer and darker,

but on "Within the Prophecy" it wasn't doom/heavy

metal yet. Some people describe this album as

"thrash metal" (i'm not sure about it personally).

How would you describe Sacrilege's style

on "Within the Prophecy"?

T - The intention was always to slow down & try

to get as heavy as possible, with past albums

like Realms & Prophecy, we always varied the

music, because we never wanted to be an

out & out thrash band, so "Turn Back Trilobite"

was the next stepping stone & sadly the end

of the road for the band.

D - Some songs had really interesting lyrics and

great names, with therminology from Tolkien

(though lyrics were more metaphorical i would say).

Who has been writing lyrics for Sacrilege mostly?

Was it Tam?

T - Tam did write the lyrics & i think she was a very

clever, creative songwriter, & a spiritually, deep person.

D - Amebix said one time that they had been

misunderstood on a punk scene because of their

non-political lyrics and strong metal influences,

was it the same with Sacrilege?

T - Maybe people expected too much from us,

but we never set out to please the masses,

we only ever followed our own path.

D - You left the band before "Turn Back Trilobite",

can you tell why?

T - The time seemed right, i never felt comfortable

in the studio & the pressure just got too much

for me, Sacrilege in my mind, was always about

playing live, even though we only ever played

20 gigs in the U.K.

D - Have you been playin in other bands after Sacrilege?

T - No, I almost joined Bolt Thrower, as i was meant

to give Jo the bass player a rest (sorry Jo), but in

the end i just chilled out & went to as many

gigs as i could.

D - Many british bands moved from punk to metal

and then after that disbanded: Sacrilege, Onslaught,

Amebix, English Dogs, etc.

Hmm strange fact, can you tell your opinion on that?

T - It does seem strange, but i cannot speak for the

other bands, Damian our guitarist was getting

very disillusioned with the scene in general,

so after the Trilobite album, his song writing got

very laid back, to the point of sounding almost

rocky & bluesy, like the old rock band from the 70s

"Free", after that, his writing became almost folksy

& quite dark & depressing, as Damian had switched

too playing mainly acoustic guitar by then, he does

not play guitar anymore, which to me is a

great loss of Talent.

D - OK can you name your favourite Sacrilege's song?

T - I have a few, but i love 'Closing Irony', from the

Realms Album.

D - What other bands from 80s were important for

Sacrilege's members?

T - Basically the same as early influences, Antisect,

Sabbath, Venom, Slayer, Metallica, Candlemass,

Trouble, etc....

D - What album was the best for Sacrilege in your

opinion? (i would say they all were unique

interesting to know your thoughts!)

T - It has to be "Behind the Realms of Madness"

without a doubt.
...

D - Can you remember the best gig you played in

your life?

T - Leeds Adam & Eves & most of the Brimingham

Mermaid gigs.

D - And the best gig you've visited?

T - Got to be Rammstein Berlin 05 @ the Wuhlheide,

what a fantastic place for a band to play.

D - You said on your myspace that you're still into

extreme music, and into Rammstein as well.

What other modern bands, apart from Rammstein,

are your favourites?

T - Emigrate, Hanzel und Gretyl,etc.

D - You have a son, does he like Sacrilege's records?

And what other bands he's listening to?

T - Yes my son likes Sacrilege & he loves his Punk/Metal,

Sum 41, Blink 182, Green Day, Linkin Park & many,

many more....

D - What's your opinion on all these reunions happend

lately, Amebix even are doin a tour, Hellbastard

are ready to release an album, Concrete Sox are

reforming.. have you ever thought about playin again,

maybe even with Damian?..

T - I personally think the reunions are great & good

luck too them, remember a lot of new fans may

never of seen these bands live. I would love

to see Antisect reform myself, but as for Sacrilege,

i have already asked Damian & Tam, but sadly they

have both declined, so no Sacrilege reunion

i am afraid too say.

D - Do you think that punk and metal movements

are still actual for these days?

T - Definitely, we owe both scenes so, so much,

& the bands that have been formed,

because of those scenes is vast.

D - Do you know where is Tam now?

(maybe a stupid question sorry but its so interesting!)

And with whom from punk/metal world of 80s do

you keep relations with ('til this day).

T - I am in touch with Tam, although we have not

met up in many years, & because of my space,

i have found many old bands & friends, + made

many new friends also.

D - What are you hobbies and interests?

T - Music, Tattoos, trying to work out how to use

my computer properly, growing own vegetables,

generally trying to do up my home, going to

gigs when i can, with my Son.

D - I see that you like tattoos, what is you favourite

tattoo you've done?

T - My favourite tattoo has too be, my back which

is dedicated to my Son.

D - What movies do you like to watch?

T - Lord of the Rings, Two Towers & Return of the King.

Documentaries on History, Bikes,

anything interesting really.

D - Do you travel a lot?

T - I love visiting different countries, but due to my

knee problems, this limits what & where i can go,

there is a big world out there & i would like to see

a lot more of it before i die.

D - And the last question, i ask this one always..

If i go to England, what do you recommend to

visit/see first in your country?

T - Well England is only part of the U.K., there is

Scotland, Wales & N.Ireland too, plus Isle of Man

(Famous for MotorbikeT.T.Racing) & Isle of Wright,

which are both Small Islands close to the U.K.

If you started @ the top of the u.k. you would have

to start @ John o'Groats (Scotland), then visit the

Highlands, Lock ness(Monster), Edinburgh Castle,

Edinburgh Motolux Indian Motorcycle Shop,

Hadrians Wall (from roman empire), Lake Windermere

Cumbria, Birmingham Birth of Bands like

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc, Birmingham

Motorcycle Museum, London, Tower Bridge,

Kings Rd, Stonehenge, Glastonbury Tor, Wales,

Machynlleth, Snowdonia, Beacons National Park,

Eden project in Cornwall, Tintagel Castle, St Ives,

& @ the bottom of the u.k. Lands End.

Dublin in Southern Ireland for Guinness(Stout),

Howth, where the Late Great P. Lynott is laid too

rest( T. Lizzy).

I personally have never visited Isle of Man,

nor the Isle of Wright, but there is so much to see,

so Buying a Tourist Guide of the U.K. would help,

then plan your journey from that, it really depends

on the persons interest of the country their

visiting & what they want too see.

(this last answer was almost like a Geography

lesson! hehe follow Tony's advices! -ed.)

Finally, Greetings Russia, Slanteyye who runs the

Sacrilege U.K. MySpace Site, Sacrilege R.I.P.

& Thanks to Daniel & Grind the World Zine,

I am Selling Official Sacrilege Merchandise on Ebay,

so have a look! & i am on MySpace tonymaysacrilege,

I am still amazed @ the interest in the band some

25years on, so, thank you to Old & New Followers,

it is much appreciated.

Peace! 09.

DARKTHRONE interview

Darkthrone needs no introduction, i guess. Norway's
best and the most untrendy metal band in the world!
Fenriz answered our questions in august 2008, and the
answers are really interesting. Just as always with
Darkthrone.
The interview was splitted on two parts by Fenris,
and i left it like that.

=======================================
PART ONE

1-Hi Fenriz & Darkthrone! Great to talk with you. What
you been up to lately, how's life?..
F: I have a day time job since 1988, and apart from that
i am tenting alot (29 trips so far since april, today it's 21 august)
and hanging with my girlfriend. i stopped going out and such in
May 2005 so i have a lot more time to use in the underground
metal scene now. This scene is as good now as it was in the 80s,
but many more idiots now hahaha...

2-Of course i cannot not to ask about your upcoming
new album. (in august of 2008 it was "Dark Thrones and
Black Flags", out now on Peaceville) There was a shitload
of misunderstanding with 'F.O.A.D.',but i guess (and hope)
this new album will be also as original and surprising,
as FOAD was. So what can you tell us about new stuff -
in a couple of words?.. What inspired you or what have
you been listening when writing the riffs for that new songs?
F: After all these years we mainly inspire by ourself,
our own bold direction these days, but yeah, it has been
a lot of REAL metal (i guess Ted has listened to alot
of Judas Priest) and for me, i've been into a lot of NWOBHM
and SPEED metal. So it will be alot of that, combined with
the sound and songs of our 2 last albums. The biggest years
of change for us was 1991 and 2005.

3-The name 'FOAD' somehow reminds me of Broken Bones
and Black Uniforms.. are these punkmetal bands inspired
you in any way?..
F: I heard Black Uniforms already in 1987, but neither them
or Broken Bones has inspired our music. But FOAD was a title
that was EXTREMELY COMMON in the 80s underground,
also VENOM and VOIVOD had songs called this,
there was even a ZINE called FOAD...the list goes on.
That's one of the reasons we used the title, so 80s freak
could see that our album was HOME.

4-In my opinion, there were even MORE oldschool riffs in
last two albums, early Bathory-oriented and even some
influence of early crust/stenchcore. So why in your opinion
people are saying crap like 'they're selling out' or
'they've lost their roots' when the band actually is still
AS close to its roots as always? This dislike of oldschool black
and heavy metal in nowadays generation, why is this
happening what do you think?..
F: Yeah, if we wanted to sell out, as in SELL LOTS OF COPIES
AND TRY TO MAKE KIDS LIKE US we would have played
dimmu borgir or pantera style since 1995! What we are doing
now is doing EVERYTHING ourself, we take VERY BIG
CHANCES, changing our sound to even more free sound,
even more underground, even more down the path of
metal history.
Some people think old school is 93, well, i sing about how
little i have in common with those crybabies in our song
RAISED ON ROCK on our last album. I advice people
NOT TO STAND IN OUR WAY of our freedom sound
of 80s underground and beyond. They can go put on
corpse paint and take a photo in their back yard when
it snows instead. just don't make me hear their cry-baby
complaints.
HAIL REAL METAL

5-I really believe Darkthrone are one of very few bands
today who plays pure oldschool. You guys do what you like
the most, so is it really important for you to make some
influence on young dudes?.. In other words, do you care
will or won't your music 'educate' young generation of fans?
F: Well as i said the scene today is better than ever, it seems
a lot of young people understand the barbaric sound of the
80s underground, the real metal is back too and speed and
nwobhm and thrash and traditional doom metal... yes yes,
it's very great (as idi amin used to say hahahaha), so it seems
the 90s was a shit decade for metal, all the styles died, death,
doom, black, power, traditional and, yeah, every style was
replaced by some plastic versions of itself - or faster and
stupider versions. BUT NOW THE SOUL IS BACK INTO
THE WARRIOR OF METAL. So we play for the really old
ones, 30-45 year olds and also the die hard kids who are into
TRUE HARD RAW AND CRUSTY sound. Those who like
plastic metal, trendy 90s standard bm can go away and
listen to something else.

6-I know you're interested in underground stuff like
Nocturnal or Bludwulf... maybe you can recommend some
other modern oldschool-like bands, some names you
discovered lately?..
F: Nekromantheon, Salute, Em Ruinas, Creep Colony, Corrupt,
Whip, Portrait, Old, Midnight Rider, Demon's Gate,
Alpha Centauri, Karnax, The Devil's Blood, HEVN, it's a million
cool bands out there, just make sure you take the right path
in the myspace world so you don't end up on some 14 year
old with a computer band tributing 1995 bm stuff hahahaha
or some plastic big shot band. STAY DIRTY and soulful.

OK I WRITE THE REST LATER, i have to meet a friend of
mine to deliver him my old backpack for tenting!

PART TWO
F: YES I'm back and listening to WITCHES HAMMER
demos 85 and 86 from Canada!

7-Some underground bands are turning into big labels now,
like Toxic Holocaust for example (signed on Relapse).
Many people immediately decided they've 'sold out'.
Do you think being on big label can prevent development
of the young bands?
F: Many people says that Joel (Toxic Holocaust) sold out?! HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA IDOTS! Last time
i saw Joel he was playing Onslaught "Thermonuclear devastation
of the planet earth"-cover on small club in Oslo. He deserves to
be known by more people because he is cool and has done
GREAT work for the underground and everybody loves him
in the underground. TOXIC HOLOCAUST, I AM GLAD YOU
GOT A SOLID RECORD DEAL. It is great for the barbaric
metal kids to see that Joel could get that deal.
No bones about it.

8-It's reeealy interesting to ask you about your PUNK
(crust, hardcore) tastes, 'cause such a questions are not so
oftenly asked by many journalists... so what punk bands
influenced Darkthrone and you (Fenriz) personally?
Just a several names.
F: Well in the 80s almost everyone was influenced by punk.
Even Cronos from Venom said he was influenced by Rush
and PUNK haha. Discharge was extremely important. I have
only 2 riffs on this album DARK THRONES AND BLACK
FLAGS inspired by punk, it is a part played like HIS HERO
IS GONE and another part i was thinking of PUKE from
Sweden, one of my all time favourite punk bands. I have
learned to like original punk band the most, Amebix,
Raped Teenagers, Rudimentary Peni, Warfare, English Dogs,
Dead Kennedys, Septic Death, Beyond Possession,
Cryptic Slaughter ...most of these from when i was young in
the 80s, in 90s more style of DETESTATION, and 'Everyday
Slaughter' album by....DISFEAR was very good. The 2000s
i got into very many bands like Hellshock, World Burns to
Death, Hevn, Skitsystem, Uncurbed, Accursed, Sanctum,
Crow, the list goes on forever. I get around 400-800 records
every year, so it's alot of every style that i listen to.
I like atleast 150 music styles/sub genres.

9-Are your musical tastes differ with Nocturno's tastes
very much or they're mainly similar?..
F: I think he is busy with a lot of other things than always
listening to music. i am the one OBSESSED with music in
this band. He likes a lot of the styles i like too, yeah.
But i am completely possessed by music.

10-What kinds of literature do you prefer? Who's your
favourite authors?
F: I am a public person here, and have to concentrate
mostly on newspapers like AFTENPOSTEN. I hate and
boycott TABLOIDS by the way. And i also read a lot of
literature and other facts about the forests around Oslo,
since this is where i am at home and i am known for this
here in Oslo. (1560 km2 of forests around here, it's
enourmous for a capitol)

11-If i decided to travel to Norway, what would you
recommend to visit first?..
F: Uff i don't know, i am so specialized in my interests
so i only know about forests of Oslo. Most people should
take the HURTIGRUTA a famous boat trip. But maybe
it's expensive i don't know. I wouldn't visit Oslo, people
should see the west of norway or north i guess. But my
home is the forests around here.

12-If you've ever been to Russia, tell us about your
impressions?.. And, maybe you know some russian bands? :)
F: Hahaha, no no, i do not like to travel. I have everything
i need in my life, and i am extremely busy here.
I have almost only heard ARIA/apur, i really really like
their KROV ZA KROV album. Fucking great Iron Maiden
worship!

...thank you a billion for the interview and i hope
readers could learn something about great bands
and right underground attitude!

p.s. originally printed in GRIND THE WORLD #1 in december 2008 on russian.

YDINTUHO interview

YDINTUHO means "Nuclear Destruction", at least guys told me so.
This band from northern Finland is mixing oldschool first-wave death
metal with dis-beat and hardcore punk, and the result is more than
awesome! You have to give this band a listen here:
www.myspace.com/ydintuho

Veke (guitars) answered on my questions (thanx for sending it to me
again!!) autumn '2008

================================================

1. P: Hi Ydintuho! Thanx for doin the interview with our zine. Well,
not so much information on your myspace about when you formed
the band, so can you tell us?..
V: Ydintuho was formed in late summer 2007.

2. P: You're from Rovaniemi, north of Finland. Are there many active
bands in your town and what music are they playin'?..
V: Actually we're all from Kuusamo, small and cold town in

north-east Finland. I live in Rovaniemi nowadays and other

guys in Kuusamo. Not much to say about Kuusamo's music

"scene", a few cover bands and a couple of crappy metal bands.

In Rovaniemi there's some punk acticity and rest is

(at least what i know) somewhat crappy pop/rock
or these shitty modern sounding "metal" bands.
Exitium Terror (formerly Vеmit) from Rovaniemi are great!

3. P: Your sound reminds me of very oldschool examples and its
like oldschool death metal meets crust and hardcore..
This is incredible mixing, why have you decided to play this kind
of a subgenre?..
V: We're all into old and raw metal, raw punk, d-beat etc so it's

kind of natural for us haha!

4. P: What bands influenced you first?..
V: Hellhammer, Discharge, Disclose, Master (US),

The Shitlickers etc etc!

Raw old school metal and hardcore punk in general.

5. P: Seems like dbeat and raw punk are growing these days,

why in your opinion it's happening so?
V: ..Is it? Maybe people are bored with soft and melodick stuff
in general haha!

6. P: What's your opinion on modern underground, what bands
do you like?..
V: Well i dont really follow what's happening around, but

there's sure great bands here like The Carnival,

Black Mass Pervertor, Kylmä Sota etc.

7. P: Finland lately is popular mainly for its softrock and some
mainstream metal bands. Not very much is known about the
underground, maybe you can recommend some good finnish
underground bands of nowadays?..
V: For example those bands i mentinoed above.

The Carnival is a great combination between old finnish hc

madness and old bm/thrash metal. I'm too to lazy describe

every band, just check them out! Of course there's shitloads

of great bands.

8. P: I know your first demo is sold out already..how much

copies have you guys sold?..
V: We made 66 copies of the demo, they sold out in less than

a month. There was also 15 copies of "special edition" cassette

with Bathory rip off covers wich we sold/gave free at Kainuu

Soi festival june 2008.

9. P: Are you planning to record a full-lenght, if yes, when?
.. Maybe you're more into eps and splits?..
V: No plans for full length album yet.. I personally like to

listen music in EP lenght. We just finished two tracks for a

compilation Lp which will be released by Torture Garden Pictures.

10. P: You've also used a cassette format for making different

editions of your demo, do you guys like casstte releases?..

What do you prefer - tapes, CDs or vynil more?..
V: Cassettes are fuckin' cool! Vinyl is of course great, and cd:s

go as well. I usually dont care about the format, but of course

the analog is superb!

11. P: You're a three-piece band, have you ever changed the

line-up?.. Maybe some of you played in other bands before

(or playin now?..)
V: No changes in the line-up except that we just got a real

vocalist! Our drummer Ari played in a couple of death metal

bands in the early nineties. Kalle played Punk Rock in

Monster Hemi for several years and was forming

Violent Hammer (old school death metal) in 2006.
Also Ari and our new singer Matti played in Violent Hammer.
Me and Kalle played in Dirty Funeral which was old and

doomy heavy metal mixed with hard rock.

None of us have any other bands at the moment.

12. P: What are topics of your lyrics guys?.. Are you writing

on finnish sometimes or only on english?..
V: Nuclear destruction, war, death.. Everything is done in

english this far, but maybe we do something in finnish in future.

13. P: 'Ydintuho' - what's the meaning of this word?..
V: It means nuclear destruction.

14. P: Is it hard to exist as a band in Finland, when you must

have a constant work?..
V: We're all unemployeed at the moment except Kalle whos

studying to be that cute nurse in white dress haha! Once a

month we gather up in the rehearsal place to get drunk and

try to rehearse new/old stuff for a weekend. Usually its 90%

drinking 10% rehearsing. It's hard to exist as a band when

they rose up the alcohol taxes here in Finland haha!

(fantastic answer! -ed.)

14. P: You're living in a deep forest zone, i've also grown up in

russian Karelia where forest and lakes are covering all the

territory :) Do you like to make trips/tenting?..
V: There's nothing greater than to take a few beers and watch
the spectacular Finnish landscapes, specially in hot mid-summer

days. I used to go fishing/tenting every summer when i was

younger, but havent done that in years :(

15. P: Do you guys drink a lot? :)
V: Yes we do.. Alcohol is the fifth member of Ydintuho.

16. P: And the last question: (sorry its just for fun!) what
would you do if the cometh would strike the earth tomorrow? ..
V: Propably i would first get drunk and then start to think

what to do, or i would be crying in the closet with a pile

of shit in my pants haha!

Thanks for the interview!

Answered by Veke.
contact: www.myspace.com/ydintuho ydintuho@luukku.com

p.s. originally printed in december 2008 on russian.

CRUCIFIER interview

An interview with kickass thrash metal band from GREECE,
CRUCIFIER. They are playin' sort of a mix between canadian
and Bay-Area thrash metal schools. Thanatoid (singer)
was very kind and answered all questions in august 2008.
Myspace page is here: www.myspace.com/crucifiergreece

=================================================

1. P: Hi, Crucifier! Tell a little bit about yourself, where and when
the band have started?
T: ...Hi mate, there have been some changes in tha band's line up,
since last year, or more likely the end of 2006...we have new
material also,we just finished the recordings of a split 7" with the
classic thrash godz HIRAX (hail Katon) and we've recently signed
with Ibex moon records, a fact for which we 're very proud - and
we hope to see our new album on the shelves sometime in 2009.

2. P: You're from Greece, home for many great metal bands,
there's some black metal and other things.. so what'up with
thrash scene there?..
T: The black metal scene is really thriving - and truly guys like
Rotting christ and Septic Flesh have been very popular, but the
thrash scene is also very "happening" and there are tons of bands
that are really great there too...like benefactor dissease and mortal
thread, infest and braindead but the promotional aspect of most
of the companies involved and the underground status of most of
them doesn't help in spreading their name, outside the tight confines
of Greece.

3. P: Your sound is completely 'bay area thrash', with some influence
of Whiplash and other cult bands of 80s, maybe from german thrash
too in my opinion.. So can you name 3-5 of your main influences?
T: Vio-lence, Razor, Sacrifice, Dark Angel and Sacred Reich. We also
love the German Scene, but we think our sound is largely based in
mixing the elements of B.A and Canadian bands.

4. P: Do you have any contract with a label now? Are your albums
distibuted worldwide?..
T: Recently we signed with Ibex moon, so we 're hoping that the
new album will be availiable worldwide - and should be realtively
easy to obtain. Also "cursed cross" was released on vinyl format
by Anger of Metal (www. angerofmetal. de) so you could get it
from there....

5. P: Many people are against downloading music, but you guys are
sharing your albums yourselfes.. why have you decideto spread
your albums that way?..
T: We want to spread our name, so that's why we allow this.
So this is - a way to promote ourselves - to people that wouldn't get
to know us otherwise. We all grew up buying our records - and CDs
and it's a great compliment when somebody buys your actual
record.... it's such a bond ... so while we don't mind people listening
to our music in whichever possible way and through whatever
means and mediums, we love it when somebody buys the album
and it helps us to continue to grow - and invest the money on making
the next album better sounding etc... so it benefits the fan as well...
in the long term...

6. P: Your songs seems very aggressive. Who writes the lyrics
and what are they about in general?
T: The lyrics are written mainly by me and Nick who writes most
of the music as well, but we're all - like family we help out each
other.... and we work together as a unit...as for the aggression
- theres just too much Bullshit flying around - so it's an endless
source of inspiration - you just tune on the news on the TV
.... and it just comes naturally....

7. P: Have you made any tours lately? How was people's response?
T: We 've been largely doing local gigs - but in September we
intend to tour Holland and Belgium - and we're planning out a
bigger tour soon...

8. P: What bands of nowadays are the most interesting,
in your opinion?
T: Bonded by Blood, Fuelled by Fire, Hatchet, Mercyless Death,
Strikemaster, Violator, Municipal Waste, Legion of the Damned,
FKU, Gammabomb, Evile, Alcholizer, Executioner, Abuser,
Armored Assasin, Vexed, Witchburner and many more.

9. P: What other kinds of musik are also in your playlist,
besides metal?
T: We're addicted to THRASH metal ! Also old school Hardcore
and some nice tunes of electronic music.

10. P: Are you guys travelling a lot? Have you been to Russia?:)
T: Whenever we can ! We haven't been to Russia ! But we'd love
to come and drink all your vodka and thrash till DEATH !

11. P: Do you like to read and, if yes, what kinds of book
do you prefer?..
T: Lovecraft's stuff, SCI FI and fantasy and history books.

12. P: Tell me a couple of words about how metalheads are taking
a rest in your country, are there many gigs in your area?..
T: Gigs are many and frequent.... we simply don't rest - we go to
as many as our necks allow before giving up!!! haha

13. P: I cannot not to ask this: is ancient folklore of Greece
important to you in any way?..
T: We respect it - but it's something of the past....but most of the
modern day Greeks are a bit unworthy of it..... civilization is
decaying not only in Greece but globally - so..... it's nice to
reflect on it - and hope that things might actually get better....
although we don't hold our breath ...

14. P: Do you collect records and what do you prefer, vinyl i guess?
What's the most precious record in your collection?..
T: Yeah got a huge vinyl collection - love vinyl - but Cd is also ok.
I really love my Congumelo rarities....maybe ANTHARES and
Sepultura's split with Overdose.... just too many !!!

15. P: Okay feel free to say anything you want to my readers,
and huge thanx for the interview!!
T: WE SPIT ON THOSE WHO CHOSE TO POSE,
WE THRASH WITH ALL THE REST !!!!
Many Greeting to our fans in RUSSIA !!!!

Hlias Thanatoid - Crucifier !

p.s. originally printed in december '2008 on russian.

HELLBÖMBS interview

HELLBÖMBS is mighty grindcore/crustcore band from
Indonesia, an interview with them was taken autumn '2008
Take a look at their page: www.myspace.com/hellbmbs
Herusegn (guitars) answered all questions.

========================================

- P: Hi Hellbömbs! P: Tell a little bit about the histrory of a band - who and
when formed it?
H: We were formed sometime around early 2005, actually
Ariff, Irwan and Kody already had somewhat of a band
and I was looking for a band too so I kinda joined them..
haha its all good though, cause all of us were more or less
already close friends at that point in time and at least we
found it easy to work with each other.. or something
like that, haha!

2. P: Does any members of the bands have other projects?
H: ah yes, Kody plays in a shitload of other bands, mostly
as a drummer (Minus, Blinded Humanity) but also the
bassist for Slutet.. my other bands are all inactive, same
goes for Ariff, and there weren’t any recordings so it isn’t
worth it to mention them haha.

3. P: Are you independent band, or you're searchin for
some kind of label to release you stuff?
H: Hmm I guess we could be considered independent,
but Hasib from Azadghei Records has offered to help
press a pro CD for us so we took it up.. we’re good
friends as well, so I don’t know if that would be
considered a label? We don’t mind if people consider
us under Azadghei Records anyway because it doesn’t
really make much of a difference.. what matters if
whether they like the stuff we play or not, haha.

4. P: How much releases have you made on that moment
and, do you guys have a worldwide distribution?
H: Actually we only have 1 CD-r that only had like 25 pieces..
even the band members sadly do not own a copy.
There were supposed to have been more but it just didn’t
happen.. we just finished recording a few months back
and are gonna press it onto cd tho, all our recorded
tracks + the demo so its about 19tracks on 1 cd, hopefully
it’ll be done soon!and we’re definitely planning to record
and release more, hopefully even on vinyl but as all
the members of the band are more or less busy
(2 of us are doing national service so that cuts down
most of our spare time) it might take a while…

5. P: How's scene in Singapore, wht's popular there etc...
What's your opinion on modern bands playin 'metalcore'
and emo-core stuff?
H: ...sadly the scene here is very inactive as of late,
and I don’t really enjoy myself at the gigs here now…
Used to be a lot more fun, I really have no idea what
happened.. I have nothing against these bands that play
those styles, regardless of genre here and there there
are still a few good songs (but nothing comes to mind
now haha). If they enjoy what they play then more
power to them, that’s all.. haha.

6. P: Have you made any tours/gigs outside your country?
If yes, how was the response?
H: ..Sadly, no, mainly cause
of me cause I didn’t know where my passport was
at one point.. only got it done early this year, so hopefully
it wont be a problem anymore when it comes to this.

7. P: I've heard some songs on your myspace and some
of it is on English, some on your native language.
What are lyrics about and who is writing it in your band?..
H: Ahh actually most of the band members speak English,
my native language is Chinese but I’m horrible as hell at it,
and the other 3 members native language is in malay.
The malay song on the myspace is actually a cover from
an old malay rock band here, we don’t write lyrics in malay..
too hard for me! Lyrics are written by me and ariff, actually
we write whatever comes to mind and try to make some
sense out of it.. we aren’t really geniuses or anything so
you wont find Aus-Rotten like lyrics here
(wish we could though).

8. P: Also, i've found your stuff very melodic but with big
influence of oldschool hardcore/discore, like Black Uniforms
and even heavy metal/speed metal.. So how would you
describe your style, more newschool or completely 80s-way?..
What's your biggest influences in both metal & punk?
H: ..actually, I don’t even know how to describe ourselves..
we usually just say we play metallic punk or a metal punk
kind of way.. I’m quite sure Iron Maiden is a very obvious
influence in our sound, but other bands that have really
influenced us are Anti Cimex, Black Uniforms, Wolfpack,
Discharge, Motorhead and Black Sabbath?
Probably a few more as well..

9. P: Can you recommend some other great bands from
your country?
H: ..sure thing.. my personal favourites are Distrust
(great d-beat/discore) and Bloodstone(Thrash Metal)..
and I’m sure everyone knows Impiety too. Minus are
also a favourite, but I prefer their older stuff..
I really like Sedilix as well but sadly they’re no longer active..

10. P: Two(?) of you guys are the members of M.P.D.S.
This community is the only example of punk-metal
'movement' nowadays, but people in it are so FAR
from each other) Do you know some other guys from
M.P.D.S. personally?
H: ..haha other then the Singapore “members”
(about 6 people here?), I don’t know the others personally..
would definitely like to meet them all though one day..

11. P: We here know nothing about Singapore)
Can you tell, in a couple of words, how do you guys
spending your time and taking a rest in your free time?..
H: ok Singapore is actually a really boring country.. haha.
I guess it’s the same as elsewhere in the world, we just
hang out, drink and all that kind of stuff, if there are gigs
we’d go there, otherwise its more or less just hanging out..
but I really enjoy sleeping now because I’m always
so deprived of it in the army.

12. P: Do you care about politics of your country or you are
totally apolitical?
H: ...well more or less we do care about what
goes on and stuff, but become apolitical because not much
can be done, nothing changes.. sadly this is Singapore,
not a country where we are free to practice all that other
stuff that goes on without much worries. You can call us
hypocrites, posers or whatever but one must live here to
understand how stuff works.. (completely understandable
for any russian i think - ed.)

13. P: What do you think about straightedge and veganism,
are there many people in Singapore into that movement?..
H: ahh there are quite a few, some of our friends are also
into that as well.. I guess its good for them, if they’re happy
with it why not eh? Just means more stuff for the rest of
us haha! Its just not a lifestyle that I choose to take up.

15. P: If some of you like to read a lot, can you name some
great authors/books you like to read?
H: Ariff reads a lot, will have to get back to you on this!
I try my best to read more as well, but I don’t always
know what to read.. I read lots of random stuff,
so I cant really think of books that come to mind..
just finished reading a few Chuck Klosterman books
about 2 months back tho, thought they were pretty good.

16. P: Also it would be cool to know your tastes in movies.)
H: I like nearly everything.. war films, gangster films,
comedies, action, blah blah blah.. some personal favourites
are Scarface (both original and the Al Pacino one),
Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Young and Dangerous,
Kung Pow, Tenacious D The Pick Of Destiny, The Departed,
Mad Max 1 and 3 (never got to watch 2 sadly),
Saving Private Ryan, Harold and Kumar
and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back.. and these are just a few!

18. P: Personal question for Harold: i know you're
serving in army now.. army service really sucks in Russia,
cause of bad conditions and stupid people there, hehe.
How would you describe army of your country?.
Are every man in Singapore must serve?
..Is it really a militaristic country?
H: ...more or less every able bodied man must serve
2 years of national service here in Singapore..
the only exceptions are those either too physically
or mentally unfit. I wouldn’t really consider Singapore
a militaristic country, this army is mainly for “defence”
because Singapore is so small and barely anyone wants
to be a soldier here so they really need all this manpower..
hahaha but its unfair for those who couldn’t care less!

19. P: Last question: do you know any bands from Russia,
and do you want to come here someday for a travel?...
H: Sadly no Russian bands come to mind at all..
I probably listen to a few but I don’t know that
they’re from Russia.. I definitely would want to go
and travel there though, after my army service
i’m planning on traveling to lots of places.. .
and if State of Decay are all free hopefully we could even tour,
would be a dream come true.

-cheers bro!

p.s. Please notice that this interview was taken
almost 8 months ago on that moment.
Originally printed in december '08 on russian.

The First Note

Hey everyone! Of course we will do so with other issues.

ENJOY!!!
